The play deficit

Children today are cossetted and pressured in equal measure. Without the freedom to play they will never grow up.  Click on the link below to read the full article:

PRESS RELEASE 12/9/13

TOO MUCH TOO SOON

Steiner Waldorf schools worldwide recognise that a later start to formal learning allows for the formative skills to become properly embedded in the first seven years.  Those skills are social, emotional and physical as well as cognitive, and need time, an enabling environment and supportive adults modelling behaviour and helping to embed the skills needed for life.  Children remain in a Steiner Waldorf early childhood setting (kindergarten) until rising seven, before more formal learning is introduced in Class 1 (National Curriculum Year 2).  Active, creative, imaginative child initiated play is a priority in the early years, where children can experience the richness of childhood rather than academic hothousing. (see http://www.steinerwaldorf.org/earlyyears.html).  Steiner kindergartens have exemptions from the Literacy, Maths and some IT part of the EYFS so that more formal instruction need not be imposed.

We have been involved with the TOO MUCH TOO SOON DEBATE from the outset, being one of the signatories.  We support the later start to formal education, in line with Steiner schools worldwide, and believe it is time that the government takes heed of this debate, engages with the research and re-thinks policy.
